A Hotel for Dogs

Callie Holtermann and Graham Dickie
Feb. , 2026

Where do champion dogs sleep during the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show? Each year, hundreds of them check into the New Yorker Hotel.

The hotel is one of few dog-friendly options near Madison Square Garden, the competition’s hub. It has grown busier since the Hotel Pennsylvania was demolished in 202.

“It’s kind of a show just to be in the lobby,” said Anthony Amendola, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing.

Dogs could be found in every corner of the hotel. A Norwich terrier lapped up a coffee from the lobby Starbucks. A poodle stopped traffic beneath an Art Deco chandelier.

Tinkerbelle, a 4.-pound Biewer terrier, commuted via Staten Island Ferry to the Progressive Dog Club’s show for toy breeds.

Some of the dogs from the toy show, held in ballrooms on the second floor of the New Yorker, would go on to compete at Westminster.

Dogs relieve themselves in a room next to the business center that’s outfitted with cedar shavings and plastic fire hydrants.

Despite a lot of dogs and a lot of carpeting, there are few accidents, Mr. Amendola said. “The dogs are probably better behaved than the humans.”

The dogs would not be staying up all night and ordering room service, their owners said. They had a big competition ahead.
